THERE ARE reports in several sections of the press about the environmental problem(s) at the Combermere School located at Waterford, St Michael.
The school is being described as a “century-old school”.
This description can convey the impression that the location of the school has been at Waterford for more than 100 years; this is incorrect.
Any reference to a “century-old school” is taking into account the fact that Combermere school came into existence approximately 300 years ago by the will of Colonel Henry Drax who died in London, England, in the month of September 1683, making it the oldest secondary school on the island.
History records the school to be variously sited at the former Queen’s College building, Constitution Road; Weymouth, Roebuck Street; The Drill Hall, Garrison and its present location circa 1958, making the life of the school at Waterford just short of 60 years.
The book Combermere School And The Barbadian Society authored by two former students of the school, professors Keith A. P. Sandiford and Earl H. Newton is a credible reference source.
