A GIGANTIC crane being assembled at Berth 5 of the Bridgetown Port will be pressed into service at monthend.
The crane, which will replace the much smaller Gantry crane now in use, is expected to improve the efficiency of cargo operations at the port. Several port workers have already received training in the use of the new equipment.
Barbados Port Inc. purchased the Panamax Container Crane from Liebherr Container Cranes. It has the capacity to simultaneously remove two containers from cargo ships and has an outreach of 37 metres. The crane can handle a twin lift capacity of 60 tonnes, allowing it to handle Panamax-sized vessels, the mid-sized ships which pass through the Panama Canal.
