Mottley blasts figures

GOVERNMENT’S new budget is nothing more than an illusion seeking to mask its widening fiscal deficit, a mountain of debt and the absence of any real economic growth strategy.

Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley yesterday dismissed Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler as “David Copperfield . . . under the big tent” and called his Appropriation Bill presentation “one of the worst . . . since Independence”.

The St Michael North East MP said Barbadians should be “disturbed” that Sinckler had again changed “measurements and comparative analyses” so that the figures in the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure 2015/2016 “can look good”.

“This minister, in all of his previous presentations, including his Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals of 2015, has been speaking to a deficit according to one measurement, and has sought today to come in and use another measurement. So that Bajans remembering the numbers alone would believe that true success has emerged at his hands,” she said.
