MCCALLUM CLARKE made a dream start to the 2016 CARIFTA Swimming Championships, posting a new record as the meet got underway today in Martinique.

In the heats, Clarke notched the fastest qualifying time of 2 minutes 37.82 seconds in the 200 metre breaststroke for 11 to 12 boys. He returned in the final to lower the time to 2:37.78, taking gold. Teammate Roan Baker was third in 2:49.01 and Jamaica’s Rajiv Redhi took silver in 2:45.69.

That was just one of 13 medals Team Barbados won on the opening day, comprising three gold, five silver and five bronze. Hannah Gill and Danielle Titus also won gold medals in the girls’ 13 to 14 and 15 to 17 800 metres freestyle. Gill clocked 9:18.27 and Titus 9:36:21.
