THE LACK of consultation in industrial relations is reaching ‘epidemic’ stages in Barbados, says president of the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), Mary Redman.

She said the void forced the hand of its sister organisation, the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), two Wednesdays ago, resulting in workers of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) being off the job for nine days, and workers at the two ports of entry for several hours on the final day.

Redman, who was delivering her report at the union’s annual general meeting held at Queen’s College yesterday, said it was a level of hostility from employers and their agents who failed to act in a manner consistent with industrial relations best practices or in a manner that was “expeditious, proactive or respectful “to their needs.

“This disregard and disrespect being shown to legitimate and registered agents of the workers in this country is a too pervasive attitude that is resulting in far too many issues reaching a level of conflict or dispute that could be avoided,” she said.
