NOTHING SHORT of proud. That is how both Mike and Lisa Matthews, parents of West Indies cricketer Hayley Matthews, feels about their daughter’s match-winning performance in Sunday’s World T20 final.

Matthews, the lone teenager in the team, hit 44 out of her 66 runs in boundaries during the match in Kolkata, India where West Indies women defeated former world champions Australia to capture the title for the first time after a number of unsuccessful semi-final performances.

Mike, a veteran cricketer himself, said he was proud of all the West Indies women.

“I feel extremely proud of Hayley and the team as well, because I know they have been trying at this for a very long time, and it’s the first time they have ever reached the finals so I am very happy that they won it,” he told the MIDWEEK NATION in a telephone interview. (RA)
