Teaching in fear
STUDENT-ON-TEACHER violence reflects issues children are experiencing at home and taking to school.
That is the view of counsellor Shawn Clarke of Supreme Counselling who said often children were having problems at home, were from broken homes and there were no conflict resolution skills available to them, leading to violent acts.
“These young people bring these things into the school because that is what they learn. A lot of young people lack respect for adults . . . and you take that into the school now and you’re showing the same disrespect to the teachers. I think it is problem that really needs to be dealt with,” Clarke said last night.
He was speaking against the backdrop of two cases of violence against teachers now engaging the attention of the Ministry of Education. (YB)
