Back-stabbing in business ‘is real’

SOLAR DYNAMICS is a household name but the pioneer behind the solar water heating business, James Husbands, says he has faced tough times with some corporate rivals resorting to dirty tactics at times against him.

Husbands, who was part of a panel discussing entrepreneurship hosted by the Barbados Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday, warned eager businesspeople to watch their backs at all times.

Intimating how a rival of Solar Dynamics Eastern Caribbean had used a former employee to sabotage his business, Husbands said he was able to survive the threat, though he was not prepared for it at the time.

“One of the things I must encourage people to do is to take threats seriously. That threat 35 years later caused us to be now collecting the embers of Solar Dynamics EC because a company that had been doing very well and earning a ten per cent return on sales, suddenly took a nosedive because the 51 per cent shareholder sold its shares to an entity that made that threat.
