A NEW HOSPITAL is still on the cards for Barbados, says Minister of Health John Boyce.
And he is scheduled to visit a possible site today.
Boyce made the declaration at a Democratic Labour Party St Philip South constituency meeting at Belair on Sunday night.
“Do not think the idea ofa new hospital is off the cards,” he said. “As a matter of fact,on Tuesday I will be doing another visit to one of the areas which we have identified as one of the most likely areas to approach Cabinet about the construction of the new hospital.”
He said the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was old, having been constructed in 1965. Buildings that age, he added, were extremely expensive to maintain and it was not easy to retrofit them for the kind of equipment a modern hospital needed to employ.
“So it is because of these reasons that we need to look at certainly getting the plans well on the way for construction of a new facility for Barbados in the near future, and that is something that is always occupying the minds of ministry officials,” Boyce said.(HLE)
