Swann, Gill take top spot

BROKEN SHOCKS and an engine overheating prevented Josh Read and Mark Jordan from taking top honours in Sunday’s Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Sunoco Shakedown Stages.

Competing in SM2 in a Toyota Starlet, they lost the use of their rear shock absorbers early in the event, before having to battle with an engine overheating problem at the end of Special Stage 5 (SS5).

But their technical crew was able to effect repair work, and at the lunch stop were still strong enough to be in second spot behind eventual winner, Britain’s Rob Swann, and Barbadian ace Sean Gill.

Bolstered by two wins in the opening events of the current season, Read and Jordan were not daunted by the presence of the Englishman, nor of the other WRC car of Roger “The Ninja” Hill and Graham Gittens and were six-tenths of a second on the first run  from Four Hills to Orange Hill, ahead of Swann and Gill in a Subaru Impreza WRC S12B, who were slow off the start-line.
