Sub-zonal chess tourney begins tomorrow
NINE COUNTRIES will be represented at this year’s Sub-zonal Chess Championships in Barbados.
President of the Barbados Chess Federation, Allan Herbert, said hosting the championships, which include the women’s and the open sub-zonal competitions, at Divi Southwinds from tomorrow to Monday, will serve a dual purpose.
“It’s part of our lead-up to the 50th anniversary celebrations . . . . The other benefit of holding the sub-zone is that based on your performance in the event you can automatically qualify for certain international titles. For example, the winner of the tournament can become an international master,” he said.
Herbert said the hosting of the sub-zonal this year would lead up to the climax of the Central And Caribbean Junior Championships, where he is hoping the federation would be in a very strong medal standing at least in the open section since it will be the final year for most of the juniors. (RG)
