THE CARIBBEAN CHAMP is now cycling’s national king.

Joshua Kelly justified his status as the country’s best road rider on Saturday after the Caribbean time trial winner turned France-based pro led from pillar to post to win the National Road Race title in St Philip.

Racing the gruelling Bushy Park/Stewart’s Hill course, the 20-year-old Massy United rider finished his quota of ten laps in just under three hours in overcast conditions.

Perennial time trial champion Russell Elcock, riding unattached, was a surprise second-place finisher when he outsprinted eventual bronze medallist Jamol Eastmond (A-Class Batteries Golden Wheelers) and Kelly’s older brother Jesse (Massy United) at the line.

Kelly will be going after the double in tomorrow’s national time trial in Beulah, St Philip. (JM)
