THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION’s (UDC) Gardening Workshop stirred the passion of several plant lovers on Saturday.

The workshop, which was entitled The Art Of Good Gardening: Understanding The Basics, attracted a modest group to the demonstration room of the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, where it was held.

Horticulturist Jeff Chandler led the two-hour session that comprised a lecture, a practical session in arranging ‘planters’ and brief tour of a plant bed with ornamental plants like Euphorbia milii (crown of thorns), Petunia X (petunia) and Ricinus communis (castor bean).

Noting that maintaining gardens was especially challenging during drought conditions, Chandler gave pointers on what could be planted and the best way to do so. He noted, for example, that the use of drip irrigation and mulching had become necessary. (LT)
