IN A FEW MONTHS, drilling for oil and gas will commence off the shores of Barbados.
Yesterday the Black Belly Block located off the island’s West Coast was awarded to Spanish company Repsol S.A. as part of the Barbados Offshore Petroleum Programme, which was launched in 2007.
Jamar White, acting director of natural resources in the Ministry of Energy, revealed that in April last year BHP Billiton had been awarded the Carlisle Bay and Bimshire blocks to the south of the island and work was expected to start within the coming months.
“We are very close to having that work completed so that the company can begin its work in earnest in offshore Barbados.
“We are still moving ahead with that. We would have signed the exploration licence with that company last year and we are actually in the process now of finalising the environmental impact assessment,” White said. (LK)
