NUPW may walk with BLP

THE PUBLIC SERVICE could be in for a major disruption on Wednesday when the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) calls out public officers to a major meeting.

And while the focus of the 2 p.m. session is set to be on salary increase proposals, yesterday NUPW president Akanni McDowall told the DAILY NATION that discussions surrounding the union’s participation in the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) Walk For Justice the following day would be on the agenda.

McDowell said that while he had not been in contact with anyone from the Opposition party regarding Thursday’s demonstration, he would not rule out discussing the matter with Government workers who have not had a pay increase since 2008 when they got a ten per cent wages hike across the board.

Insisting that he was politically neutral, McDowall added: “It is something that I have not ruled out. I guess I can discuss [the march] with my people and I should.
