NATIONAL WOMEN’S beach volleyball pairs of Shari Matthews and Anicia Wood and Anthazia Mason and Sharon Bovell have placed Barbados into the final round of Rio 2016 Olympic qualification for countries within the North, Central American and Caribbean (NORCECA) Confederation.

Competing in the third round of the Olympic qualifier in San Salvador, El Salvador, over the past weekend, Barbados finished sixth out of the 12 countries from the NORCECA’s Caribbean and Central America subgroupings.

Finishing ahead of Barbados were the event winners Costa Rica, who defeated Guatemala in the finals; third placed Nicaragua, Jamaica and hosts El Salvador. Also participating were Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, Suriname, St Lucia, US Virgin Islands and French St Martin.

The top six from this event have booked a spot in the final round to be played in Mexico next month along with Canada, the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba for a ticket to the Rio Olympics. (EZS/PR)
