National sports teams feted
BARBADOS’ recent sporting performances have not gone unnoticed. Or unrewarded.
At least eight of the country’s successful sporting squads, including members of all three West Indies champion cricket teams, were feted during a cocktail reception at Kensington Oval Friday night.
Hosted by the National Sports Council at the landing of the 3Ws Stand, the event served as an official recognition for the accomplishments of the CARIFTA athletics, swimming, chess and water polo contingents along with the second-placed Under-16 netball team.
But the night belonged to the world’s best, with the seven Bajan members of the Windies’ title-winning women’s T20 squad – Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, Shaquona Quintyne, Kyshona Knight, Kycia Knight, Shamilia Connell, Shakera Selman – all collecting crystal vases in front of an audience that included International Olympic Committee member Sir Austin Sealy.
