THE ACUTE SHORTAGE of equipment at the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) is apparently getting worse.

Well placed sources told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday that the reason for a major build-up of garbage along roads all over the country over the past two weeks was a severe shortage of compactor trucks.

In fact, investigations revealed that at various stages last week the authority was trying to service the refuse collection needs of the island with either eight or nine working trucks in its fleet. Yesterday, the source said, there was some improvement with 13 working trucks to service the country.

According to that source, the state agency needs no fewer than 26 working trucks to guarantee at least one collection in every district per week, and no fewer than 34 to service the island at the required level. (RRM)
