BARBADIAN teenager Ché Allan has jumped to No. 6 in the North American region’s rankings on the World Surf League (WSL) Men’s Junior Tour.
Going into the WSL Los Cabos Open Of Surf in Mexico last weekend as the No. 10 seed, the 17-year-old Allan finished a commendable ninth out of a field of 48 top junior surfers from North America, South America, Hawaii and the Caribbean.
This performance, along with his fourth place finish in Cocoa Beach, Florida, earlier this year, enabled him to climb four places in the standings of the North American region.
With the total points from the five best contests of the year being used to determine the top four surfers to attend the WSL Junior final in January next year, Allan will be looking for an even better performance at his next WSL contest, the prestigious US Open Of Surfing at Huntington Beach, California, in July.
Before he competed at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico, Allan did a ten-day familiarisation tour of Hawaii, where he had the thrill of surfing the world famous Pipeline and other North shore breaks that he will have to surf in future contests.
But Allan, who is the reigning Under-18 national champion and the No. 1 ranked surfer on the Barbados junior team, won’t be available to represent Barbados at the ISA World Junior Games in Azores, Portugal, in September.
He said he had committed to a WSL contest in Newport, California around the same time.
Allan will also spend the majority of the year competing overseas as he tries to earn valuable experience competing in international surfing. (EZS)
