MORE WOMEN are buying into new hair trends, with Afro-textured hairstyles making a big bang.

That was the observation made by local cosmetic retailers, who said they had been forced to order hair extensions based on shifting ideals of beauty.

Some retailers noted that sales of virgin hair, which took the international weave market by storm, had slowed in recent years. And the natural hair movement, which started at the turn of this century, could have contributed to changing trends.

“The demand for weaves has decreased within the last two years,” said manager at Paradise Beauty Supply, Sherry-Ann Barker. “This is as a result of people going back to their natural hair. But even women with natural hair are opting for ‘protective styles’ like crochet braids and so forth.”
