THE BARRBADOS PRIVATE Sector Association (BPSA) announced today the election of Charles Herbert as the new chairman of the association’s board of directors effective August 1, 2016.

Herbert served as an independent director on the BPSA board before succeeding Alex McDonald who having served for his elected term will be demitting office on July 31, 2016.

Charles Herbert, a consultant actuary is the principal, Eckler Limited, a company he established in 1996. He is also chairman of Goddard Enterprises Ltd.

Herbert spent the first 15 years of his professional career with the Barbados Mutual Life Ltd (now Sagicor Financial Corporation) and at the time of his resignation was vice president and in-house actuary responsible for the Actuarial, Pensions, Group Insurance and IT Departments.   Over his career, Herbert has worked with the management teams of various public and private sector companies and is known to many of them.  His strong, direct and analytical approach to issues will benefit not only the BPSA but also the Social Partnership.

In accepting his appointment as chairman, Herbert said: “My objective and my only way of doing a good job is to draw and rely on the collective counsel and experience of the Board and our entire membership. With your support and together with consensus, we can make a difference in Barbados by ensuring full consultation though the Social Partnership and with our other stakeholders. I wish also to thank Alex for the strong role of advocacy and lobbying on behalf of the private sector during his tenure as Chairman.”

In handing over the chairmanship, McDonald said, “I am confident that Charles possesses the skills, experience and commitment to provide the kind of leadership that will be required to take the Association forward at this time. I would like also to express my appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the development of the private sector and to the national development of Barbados. I hope that as we continue to face challenging times every effort will be made to sustain and strengthen the Social Partnership.  For the next two years I will be serving on the Board of the BPSA in the capacity as past chairman and so will continue to give my support to the BPSA, NISE and to the Social Partnership”.

The BPSA is the umbrella body of private sector associations in Barbados, and its main role is to promote and defend the interests of the Barbados Private Sector at the national level and within the Social Partnership of Barbados. (PR)
