BARBADOS was the first choice of organisers to host the final and play-offs of the Hero Caribbean Premier League but Kensington Oval missed out on staging the showpiece matches because Government did not submit a formal bid.

Explaining the delay over the late announcement of the venue for the last four matches of the glitzy Twenty20 tournament, CPL chief executive officer Damien O’Donohoe revealed yesterday that the first bid was only received a week before the start of the competition.

After weeks to negotiations with different parties, the CPL awarded the finals to St Kitts on the eve of the tournament.

“At the end of the day, the business has to wash its own face. That’s why a big part of doing that is the tender on the finals. Although we’ve been out in the market since last September, it was only the Thursday before the tournament started that we got our first offer,” O’Donohoe told the WEEKEND NATION. (HG)
