Bronze for Burke in Poland
MARIO BURKE HAS WON Barbados’ first medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Burke took bronze in the men’s 100 metres, clocking 10.26 seconds in the final event on the programme this evening.
Noah Lyles of the United States won gold in 10.17 seconds and Italy’s Filippo Tortu silver in 10.24 seconds. Jamaican Raheem Chambers was sixth in 10.30 seconds.
Burke also won a silver medal at the CARIFTA Games in the same event, while Chambers took the bronze.
Jaquone Hoyte, the other Barbadian in the race, reached the semi-finals, but did not advance with his time of 10.73.
Overall, it was a good day for the Barbadian contingent.
Michael Nicholls qualified for the finals of the men’s 110 metres hurdles with back-to-back personal best times in the first two rounds. After clocking 13.62 seconds in the heats, Nicholls came back with 13.42 seconds to book his place in the final, where he will run out of lane one.
Jamaican De’Jour Russell is the gold medal favourite after racing to a world leading time of 13.20 seconds.
Tristan Evelyn is also through to the next round of the women’s 100 metres, finishing third in her heat in 11.83 seconds. (SAT)
