Windies lose first Test to India

ST JOHN’S – West Indies, undermined by a seven-wicket haul from off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, crashed to an innings and 92 runs defeat against India on the fourth day of the first cricket Test at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here Sunday.

Following on with a deficit of 323 runs, West Indies were dismissed for 231 off 78 overs in their second innings.

All-rounder Carlos Brathwaite top scored with 51 not out off 82 balls in 111 minutes while Marlon Samuels stroked 11 fours in exactly 50 off 85 balls.

Tailender Devendra Bishoo also batted defiantly for 45, sharing a ninth wicket stand of 95 with Brathwaite, who struck three fours and two sixes.

Ashwin finished with the excellent figures of seven for 83 in 25 overs.

Apart from Samuels, there was little resistance from the Windies’ middle order batsmen as Jermaine Blackwood (0), Roston Chase (8), Shane Dowrich (9) and captain Jason Holder (16) all went cheaply while opener Rajendra Chandrika made 31.

West Indies had been dismissed for a modest 243 in their first innings, replying to India’s massive total of 566 for eight declared.
