BARBADIANS ARE BEING encouraged to participate in this year’s Emancipation Day Walk, which will be held on Monday, August 1.
Celebrations will take the form of a motorcade and walk, and walkers in their African-inspired wear are asked to assemble at the National Stadium by 8 a.m., in order to leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. for the two-hour walk to the Spring Garden Highway.
Walkers will leave the National Stadium through the Jaycee’s Gate (north end/by Lumber Company); and continue past Combermere School. At Waterford junction, they will take the right onto Waterford/Station Hill; travel along Station Hill towards Eastmond Corner, and at the Eastmond Corner junction (traffic lights), turn right onto Bank Hall main road.
From there, the walkers will travel along Bank Hall Road passing Bank Hall Cross Roads (traffic lights), at Bank Hall/Eagle Hall junction (traffic lights); continue on to Black Rock main road; travel Black Rock road continuing to Frank Worrell roundabout (bottom of University Drive/Hill); turn left onto Spring Garden Highway (1st exit at roundabout) and finish along Spring Garden Highway.
Deputy director of the Commission for Pan African Affairs, Dr Deryck Murray, will deliver the welcome address while Chairman of the National Taskforce on Reparations, Professor Pedro Welch, will give remarks.
Also joining in the celebrations will be Bobo, the Haynesville Youth Group Drummers, Israel Lovell Foundation, Ife’s Mokojumbies and the Barbados Land ship.
Those who are unable to walk are encouraged to show their support along the route from the Stadium to Spring Garden and enjoy the live performances and cultural spectacle on the road, as we celebrate both Emancipation Day and our 50th Anniversary of Independence. (BGIS)
