Holidays ‘hurting’ economy

TWO CONSECUTIVE WORKDAYS off  is too much time to lose in the workforce, especially with several of Barbados’ businesses struggling to keep afloat.

What’s more, it comes at a time when employees’ productivity in both the public and private sectors continues to be low and this is contributing to impeding economic growth.

So says Tony Walcott, the executive director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC), in response to the impact of losing two days this week – Grand Kadooment Day tomorrow, then Emancipation Day, which is being celebrated on Tuesday.

Walcott said what’s happening now demonstrates the need for a rationalisation of public holidays in Barbados as recommended by the BEC’s governing council nearly two years ago.
