BARBADIAN CARLOS BRATHWAITE has been tipped as the new West Indies T20 captain.

Although no official announcement has been made, it is being reported that Brathwaite, 28, will be the next captain of the side.

St Lucian Darren Sammy yesterday announced he had been sacked via video on Facebook.

“I got a call yesterday morning, it was probably 30 seconds, from the chairman of selectors telling me that they’ve reviewed the captaincy of T20 and I won’t be captain anymore of the T20 team, [and] my performances have not merited selection in the … squad,” Sammy said in the video.

“That’s okay, I’ve always believed West Indies cricket is not about Darren Sammy. They are looking to the future and I wanna wish the new captain –I don’t know if it’s out yet so I won’t call any names – all the best as he looks to lead West Indies cricket and take it forward.”

Sammy led the West Indies to victory in the ICC World T20 Championships in Kolkata, India last April.

Brathwaite was the hero of the final, stroking four sixes in the final over to ensure victory.

He made his T20 International debut nearly five years ago and has played 55 matches.

Jason Holder currently captains the Test and One-Day International sides. (BN)
