Griffith: Cut VAT from funeral costs

MINISTER OF FINANCE, Chris Sinckler is being urged to remove  or substantial reduce  the 17.5 per cent value added tax (VAT) on funeral costs.

Social development advocate George Griffith said yesterday that his request was against the background of increasing financial hardship being experienced by Barbadians across class, colour and political affiliation.

Griffith, who is associated with one of the leading funeral establishments,  said people are forced to endure this additional tax burden at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerable.

“Those of us who come face to face with individuals and families when they are put to the necessity of having to assume responsibility for the final arrangements of loved ones know only too well what these grieving families go through when faced (in most cases) with the unexpected death in the family. (ES)
