THIS YEAR’s St Michael parish ambassadors have embarked on a project to highlight the contribution the rum shop has made to Barbados’ rich heritage.
Parish ambassador Davianne Phillips said the main aim of their project – The Rum Shop . . . An Unsung Treasure – was to sensitise people to what role and function the rum shop played in society.
“We are looking to highlight the village rum shops and how they have contributed to the development of the landscape of Barbados,” she said.
“When our parents and grandparents were growing up, we know that the rum shop was a place where they would go to get credit and to help out with the groceries if there was a shortage of food in the home. (RA)
