King loses tough match
THE COMEBACK KING didn’t have a final rally left in him.
Darian King’s run at the US Open is done, and in heartbreaking fashion too, as the Bajan ace squandered a break in the third set before losing yesterday’s tough second-round qualifying match.
Battling back from another one-set deficit, the 24-year-old King couldn’t hang on to a 2-0 lead in the third set of a gut-wrenching 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 defeat to former top 80 player Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan.
As a result, King fell tragically short of becoming just the second Barbadian tennis player to advance to the main draw of a Grand Slam.
“It’s so disappointing and tough to handle these losses because you think you are right there but that’s tennis I guess,” said a visibly upset King.
