Siren no excuse for ‘reckless driving’

A BLARING EMERGENCY siren is not a free pass to break the rules of the road, says police public relations officer, Station Sergeant Roland Cobbler.

During an interview with the SUNDAY SUN yesterday, Cobbler said any emergency service vehicle personnel seen doing so were at their own risk, regardless of the situation.

“Our policy states that drivers must comply with all the rules of the road, and in cases of emergencies, drivers can break them but at their own risk. Even if using a siren, you still have to operate responsibly . . .  and stay within the speed limit,” he said.

Cobbler said it was within the authority of the Police Force to take action when and if officers spotted such behaviour. (CA)
