THE BARBADOS Olympic Association (BOA) has given $35 000 to the Barbados men’s hockey team to assist the 18-member squad on their journey to the FIH Hockey World League in Salamanca, Mexico, from September 27 to October 2.

At a send-off at the BOA headquarters on Wednesday evening, BOA assistant secretary general Cameron Burke said that of all the team sports the body saw hockey as showing promise in reaching higher heights.

“We in the BOA feel that if a team sport is to medal the only team sport that can medal is hockey; that is our belief,” he said.

“When you look at volleyball in the Norceca region and you start from the USA and come down, and when you look at basketball it’s similar. The only real competitive team that we have is hockey and the only way it can happen is if we expose the players.”  (RG)
