‘Irresponsible’ for businesses to open, says Brathwaite
DESPITE BARBADOS FEELING the effects of Tropical Storm Matthew, some businesses have opened their doors today.
And this news has not gone down well with Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite.
Speaking at a Department of Emergency Management Press conference earlier this morning, Brathwaite criticised an unnamed fast food restaurant and supermarket for this practice.
“I’m advised for example that one of the fast food chains and some of its outlets are open. At least one well known supermarket chain is open,” Brathwaite said.
“I think it’s irresponsible for these institutions, if what I’m hearing is correct, to be opened at this point in time when we’re asking persons to stay indoors because of how dangerous the surroundings are,” the Minister of Home Affairs continued.
Brathwaite said that while he understood the importance of business, the reality was that it was dangerous out on the road and emphasised how serious the potential consequences were if the warnings were not heeded.
Lemongrass restaurant in Limegrove Lifestyle Centre received swift backlash from Facebook users when it announced it would be open for lunch.
Some people called the move “unethical,” “disgraceful” and “shameful” and vowed never to return to the eatery. (AD)
