Garbage piles getting smaller

THE GARBAGE PILES are coming down slowly but surely across Barbados.

Three of the private companies hired to move refuse from three rural parishes are still bringing in heavy numbers of trash, but it’s nothing close to the more than 300 000 kilogrammes (1 000 kg = 1 tonne) which were removed from St John, St Philip and St Peter in the first two weeks of the pilot programme.

“We are still bringing in about seven tonnes of garbage every day,” Trevor Manning, general manager of Garbage Master, told the DAILY NATION. “In the first week it was a lot more and the numbers have now started to fall off. In the past two weeks the level of garbage has really come down.” (BA)
