CHAMPIONS St Cyprian’s Boys’ aced their first chance at defending their title at the Cave Shepherd/Berger Royale National Primary Schools Road Tennis Championship yesterday.

They grabbed the top spot of the Abigail Haynes Zone at Rubis Sports Club, Spring Garden, with three wins and one loss – 2-1, 2-1, 2-1, 1-2 – ahead of St Jude’s and Milton Lynch Primary.

They were spurred by an exceptional performance by Aiden Parris, who won his four games. His performance was certainly the life-saver since St Jude’s caused some trouble to equal them in wins and losses.

However, Parris’ point difference edged St Jude’s to give St Cyprian’s the victory.

There was no doubt that Parris dominated the courts, leaning on his technique to force his opponents to make a number of unforced errors.

He defeated D’Angelo Grosvenor of St Jude’s 21-7, 21-7; Jaylan Phillips of Grantley Prescod 21-7, Jacobi Best of Milton Lynch 21-5 and Tristan Forde of St Giles’ 21-6.

Trouble from St Jude’s came in the form of the skilful Tyrese Holder, who played beyond his years, leaving his mark on the courts as one for St Jude’s to watch.

Holder played a part in taking the fourth match from St Cyprian’s, defeating Marcus Whittinton 21-11. Holder was assisted by Jaheem Elliot, who defeated Khalil Nurse 21-13.

Holder also defeated Victor Simpson of Milton Lynch 21-9, Tristan Forde of St Giles’ 21-5 and Azahri Haynes of Grantley Prescod 21-8.

Milton Lynch Primary placed third with one win and three losses. (RG)
