Vacancies worrying NUPW

THE NATIONAL UNION of Public Workers (NUPW) is upset because of a recent decision of the Public Service Commission not to fill a number of vacancies in the Customs and Excise Department.

“The Commission has informed the NUPW that the union’s request to fill the remaining vacancies cannot be facilitated given the guidelines set out in the Recruitment and Employment Code,” acting assistant general secretary, Wayne Walrond, said in a statement.

“The NUPW is contending that there are suitably qualified and competent officers who can be appointed to the remaining vacancies by engaging the same the Recruitment and Employment Code which was used to fill other Customs posts.

“Another fundamental issue relates to the status of clerical officers who have executing Customs and Excise duties over the years. As a result, these officers have been disadvantaged in not receiving the appropriate compensation and hence, the NUPW is seeking to have post of customs officer III created to rectify the situation.”
