Drakes, Moseley launch Wanderers

Article by PHILIP HACKETT

JONATHAN DRAKES and Shayne Moseley gave a first-class exhibition of positive strokeplay as Counterpoint Wanderers batted well against Barbados Cricket Association Elite Division title favourites ICBL Empire on the first day of the rain-hit 13th and final round of matches yesterday.

Drakes, who ended unbeaten on 90, and left handed-opener Moseley put on 139 for the second wicket at Dayrells Road, as fourth-placed Wanderers closed on 219 for four against Empire, who came into the match 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Moseley was dismissed for 74 through an excellent running catch by Lamar Mascoll off Shaquille Cumberbatch, but Drakes remained at the crease until bad light ended play on a day already shortened when wet conditions delayed the start by 76 minutes.

Drakes was especially dominant through the off side. He drove medium-pacer Mascoll over long off for six to celebrate his half-century. He also played an exquisite square cut for four off medium-pacer Tennyson Roach and cover drove the same bowler for another boundary. (PH)
