THE THREAT of the voracious lionfish still looms large as divers report leaving scores of the invasive species behind on the island’s reefs.
But, they say, the numbers of local reef fish appear to be holding steady despite the threat.
Lionfish are best known for their ability to eat almost everything in sight and reproduce at an alarming rate in the tens of thousands. They have no known natural predators except humans.
The divers were part of the third annual Lionfish Derby yesterday, which saw 13 dive operators and teams scouring the reefs of the South and West Coasts for the pests. (HLE)
