Heavy rains in the north

RAIN pelted down on Barbados yesterday and left parts of the north under water.

The Barbados Meteorological Services described the system responsible for the showers as a surface-to-low-level trough.

It also reported that the rainfall measured was 15.7 millilitres.

The system is expected to weaken by noon today.

The steady rains started around mid-morning and continued into the afternoon, causing an early closure of Alexandra School, and pounded areas such as Mullins, St Peter, and Rock Dundo in St James.

Traffic was brought to a crawl along Mullins on Highway 1 as drivers had to travel through murky waters. The deluge also uprooted parts of the road.

People in surrounding districts complained that they had to find alternative roads to exit the north. (TSG)
