SOME THIRTY EMPLOYEES of regional airline LIAT might soon be on the breadline.

Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy did not say when or where the staff will be cut as he made the announcement during a contribution in the House yesterday.

The carrier employs some 669 staff but at one point the count was more than 1 000. Less than 100 of the present employees are in Barbados with the majority at LIAT’s headquarters in Antigua.

Sealy said: “We are trying to run a lean, mean more efficient operation but at the same time not compromise our social responsibility to the people of the Caribbean.

“This Government has made tough decisions because we understand it can’t be business as usual – that is the reality. And you know what we are probably going to reduce that staff count by another 30,” he added. (SDB Media)
