Dialysis fear

FOR THREE DAYS STRAIGHT, dialysis patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) have been complaining about malfunctioning equipment they claim placed their lives at risk.

One patient reported that on Tuesday, he arrived at the hospital just after 5 a.m. and did not leave until 5:30 p.m. after having to wait for several hours.

Another said that yesterday, he arrived at 6 a.m., only to find a vital piece of equipment did not start working until noon.

Later in the evening, however, head of the Artificial Kidney Unit, Dr Lisa Belle, told the DAILY NATION the problem had been rectified, and the head of the hospital had given permission for patients who were turned away to be treated at a private facility. (YB)
