SHE IS HOME for Christmas and the usual bells are on.

There is always a warm and fuzzy feeling when she gets a chance to be with her “mum”, whether it’s in person or social media, but this year is the first time Ulli Zika has been back in Barbados for Christmas since 1992.

Rewind further to 1987, when the then 16-year-old came to Barbados as part of the American Field Scholar (AFS) programme.

Like all of the other scholars, Zika had to list five places on her application. Her first four choices were in South America, and a scan of the other options ended with Jamaica because of the Bob Marley factor. Barbados was never on her radar, and there would be times during that year’s stay and several times after when she questioned why fate sent her here. (YB)
