OVER 30 yachts from as far as Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom will be sailing around the island in the 81st Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series sailing off today.

This was confirmed by organiser Howard Palmer at a press launch to open the event at the Shallow Draft, Bridgetown Port yesterday.

“We are trying to build this internationally so our growth is really in international yachts. We will always get the local yachts [and] we will get the Caribbean yachts. We want to get the Austrian, the German, all of these kinds of entries,” he said.

“Once we start to get them and those folks are here in Barbados and it gets mentioned in their magazines, you have got the connections now from Frankfurt, Munich, more European connections, and these are very competitive nations with great sailing traditions. That’s the way I see we are going to grow internationally,” he added. (RG)
