BARBADOS’ NEWEST CENTENARIAN Erla Browne engaged Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave in a witty, lively conversation when he paid a visit to mark her birthday yesterday.

The former teacher who was born at Lightfoot Lane in Bridgetown and grew up in Belleville, St Michael, now lives in England, but came home to celebrate the milestone accompanied by daughter Betty Sanders, the only surviving one of her children.

Five generations of Browne’s family from Barbados, Canada and Britain joined her at the Salters, St George home of her hosts Jackie and George Brathwaite, for the Governor General’s visit and, surrounded by young and old, she was effusive in her praise of family.

It was also the sixth birthday of her Canadian-born great granddaughter Eleanor Leach and she presented the little girl with a birthday card following up with a big hug and kiss. (GC)
