BARBADIANS COULD SOON be working on farms in the United States if negotiations with officials in that country are successful.

Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer Suckoo said the island was working to establish a programme similar to the Canadian Farm Labour Programme that has been in operation for almost 50 years.

Addressing the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural workshop at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael, on Monday, Byer Suckoo said: “We went to America just two weeks ago and we have gotten good interest. There are people who are interested there in hiring Barbadians so I am hopeful that this year we can have people on the ground in the United States.”

She said the Ministry of Labour was looking to expand the Liaison Office Unit in the United States as well as the office in Canada. (LK)
