70 per cent not ‘sick’ leave

BARBADIAN WORKERS are calling in sick for all sorts of reasons – other than being genuinely ill in many instances.

They have been staying away from work to attend funerals and sports days; to run personal errands; and to take care of loved ones.

As workers across many sectors rack up sick days, only 30 per cent of their time off has anything to do with actual illness.

Chief programme manager at the Productivity Council, Anthony Sobers, concerned about the major issue of sick leave and the effect it is having on companies, said the remaining 70 per cent of leave was taken to attend to “personal matters”. (CM)
