‘Comply or face court’

EVEN IF YOU ARE operating in the underground economy, the taxman will be coming after you.

The warning to defaulters came yesterday from Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) Commissioner Margaret Sivers, who promised that the state agency would use all means of enforcement to ensure people paid what they owed.

However, she is urging defaulters to engage in “voluntary compliance” to avoid the BRA having to employ legal muscle.

“What we are seeking to do is implement a more strategic focus on dealing with our non-filers . . . to address the underground economy,” Sivers said yesterday while addressing a week-long financial techniques training course at BRA’s Warrens Tower II headquarters. (AD)
