King makes historic start at Indian Wells
DARIAN KING has made history again.
Barbados’ top ranked pro is moving on at his first ever ATP 1000 event after winning his first round match tonight at Indian Wells in California.
Playing world No.55 Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia on court six, the Bajan ace battled back from an early break in the second set and survived set point before pulling out a gutsy 7-5, 7-5 win in an hour and 45 minutes.
It serves as the 24-year-old King’s first win at an ATP 1000 tournament and comes less than a month after he upset then world No.32 Bernard Tomic at the Memphis Open.
The result also puts King, No.131, in a second-round matchup with the tenth ranked Gael Monfils of France in a big tournament that features all of the world’s top 30 players. (JM)
