HE DIDN’T get the win, but Darian King certainly won the hearts of many.
The king of swing may have turned in his best performance yet, having shocked the tennis world by taking the first set off No. 10 Gael Monfils before ultimately falling to the Frenchman in Saturday’s second round at Indian Wells.
Playing in his very first ATP Masters event, the 131st ranked King made the appearance memorable, defying the odds to take an early lead until the heavily favoured Monfils won 12 of the last 13 games to pull out a 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory in the BNP Paribas Open.
It was a gutsy effort to say the least from the 24-year-old Bajan ace, who took the court against his first top ten opponent less than a month after stunning former world No. 17 Bernard Tomic at the Memphis Open. (JM)
