CHEKITA BELGRAVE, the 20-year-old student who was bravely fighting an aggressive form of cancer, has died.

She died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Sunday where she was scheduled to undergo a second bout of chemotherapy this week for the cancer growing inside her mouth and consuming the right side of her face.

Chekita’s cancer battle first came to light in January after her family had earlier launched a GoFundMe account and then made a public appeal for assistance with her more than $240 000 medical bill to treat osteogenic sarcoma, a cancerous bone tumour.

Friends of the former Queen’s College student, work groups and the general public responded, and in January, she left Barbados for Canada where she underwent surgery.

She returned to Barbados weeks after to undergo chemotherapy even in the face of the news that the tumour was growing again.

Chekita was admitted to the hospital on March 4 where she started the chemotherapy and would have undergone a second bout of the treatment on Thursday and additional treatment in Canada, but did not survive. (AC)
